LinkedIn Connector for ChatGPT: What It Takes to Set One Up
People ask for a “LinkedIn connector for ChatGPT” expecting it to work like a normal app store install: find it, click add, done. It does not work that way yet. There is a real path, it is genuinely useful once you are through it, and it has three gates that catch almost everyone. This page is the honest checklist of what it takes, and what it feels like afterwards.
What is a connector in ChatGPT?
A connector is an outside tool that ChatGPT is allowed to call while you are chatting. You describe what you want in plain words, ChatGPT works out which action to run, and the outside tool does the actual work — in this case, publishing to your LinkedIn account.
The wiring underneath is MCP (Model Context Protocol, an open standard for plugging AI assistants into outside tools). ChatGPT’s interface calls these “connectors” in some places and “plugins” in others, and the developer settings screen calls the thing you add a “New Plugin”. They mean the same thing. If you have read anything about MCP servers, a connector is simply how ChatGPT refers to one.
Two things are worth understanding straight away, because they shape everything below:
- A connector is a URL, not a download. You paste an address into ChatGPT’s settings. There is no file to install, no code to run, and no server of your own to keep alive.
- The connector holds the LinkedIn permission, not ChatGPT. You sign in to LinkedIn once through the connector’s own sign-in screen. ChatGPT never sees your LinkedIn password or your LinkedIn key.
Why does a LinkedIn connector need Developer Mode?
ChatGPT has two kinds of connector. There are the built-in ones that OpenAI has reviewed and listed, which anyone can turn on. And there are custom connectors — any MCP address you supply yourself — which live behind a setting called Developer Mode.
LinkedIn publishes no official MCP server of its own, and no LinkedIn posting connector sits in ChatGPT’s reviewed list. So a LinkedIn connector is, by definition, a custom one. That puts it behind Developer Mode, and there is no way around that today.
This is a ChatGPT limitation, not a limitation of the connector. The same MCP address that needs Developer Mode in ChatGPT can be added in Claude as a custom connector on the free plan, with no special mode to switch on. If the Developer Mode requirement is a blocker for you, Claude is the easier front door to the identical tool.
Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan for a LinkedIn connector?
Yes. Developer Mode is available on the paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu. It is not on the free tier, so a LinkedIn connector cannot be added to a free ChatGPT account at all.
There is a second restriction people hit right after the first one: Developer Mode is web only. You must be in ChatGPT in a desktop or laptop browser. The iPhone and Android apps do not expose it. If you added a connector on the web and then opened the mobile app expecting it to be there, it will not be, and nothing is broken — that is simply where the feature stops.
What do I actually have to do to set one up?

Why is my connector added but ChatGPT will not use it?
Because in ChatGPT, a custom connector is off by default in every new conversation. Adding it in settings makes it available; it does not make it active.
In each chat where you want to use it, open the tools menu — the “+” button next to the message box — and switch the connector on for that conversation. Start a fresh chat tomorrow and you switch it on again. This one behaviour is behind most “my LinkedIn connector is not working in ChatGPT” reports.
What can a LinkedIn connector do once it is connected?
Once it is on, you stop thinking about tools and start giving instructions. With Kalovio connected, ChatGPT can:
- Write and publish a post to your personal LinkedIn profile, up to LinkedIn’s 3,000 character limit.
- Schedule a post for a time you choose, up to a year ahead, in your own timezone.
- Keep a queue — hand it a batch of posts and set the days and times they should go out on.
- Post images, including a swipeable set of two to nine, and PDF or slide documents as a carousel.
- Save drafts, keep a voice profile so posts sound like you, and add tracked links so you can count clicks.
Nothing publishes on the model’s say-so. Kalovio uses a two-step confirm gate: the first call returns a preview plus a signed token covering the exact wording, image and timing, and nothing is sent until a second call arrives with your confirmation and a matching token. That is a deliberate defence against prompt injection — hidden instructions buried in a web page or document the model happens to read.
Why can I not just attach an image in the chat?
This is the gotcha that surprises people most. You drag a picture into ChatGPT, ask it to post that picture, and it cannot — even though it can clearly see the image.
The reason is structural. What a connector receives is plain structured data: text fields, numbers, identifiers. A file you attached to the conversation is not part of that. It sits with the chat, not with the tool, and a plain remote connector has no route to reach it. This is equally true in Claude, so it is not a ChatGPT fault.
The way round it is an upload link. Ask for an upload link, open it in your browser, drop your images or PDF in, and you get back short ids. Then say “post these images” and name them. It is one extra step, it behaves the same in every AI app, and it is the reason we treat the link as the main path rather than a fallback.
Why does ChatGPT say it is not connected when it is?
Do not ask ChatGPT whether it is connected. It is genuinely bad at answering that, and it will sometimes say no while the connector is sitting right there, switched on and working.
Models do not reliably inspect their own tool list. They answer questions about themselves the way they answer any other question — by producing plausible text — and “I do not have access to LinkedIn” is an extremely plausible sentence. It is not evidence.
The reliable test is to ask for the work instead. Say “check my LinkedIn connection status” or “draft a LinkedIn post about this topic and show me the preview”. If a real preview comes back, you are connected, whatever the model said thirty seconds earlier.
Does my ChatGPT connector work in Codex?
No. Codex is a separate app with its own connector list and its own sign-in. Connecting in ChatGPT on the web does not carry across, and there is no shared account link between them. If you want the same tool in another app, you add it there and sign in again. We do not currently recommend Kalovio for Codex.
The same logic applies in reverse, and that part is good news: connecting in ChatGPT does not disturb anything you have already set up in Claude. Each app holds its own connection to the same service, and both point at your one LinkedIn account.
What can a LinkedIn connector still not do?
Worth knowing before you set anything up, because these are hard limits rather than missing features:
- It cannot read posts you did not create through it. The LinkedIn permission for reading your own post history,
r_member_social, is closed to self-serve apps. So “summarise my last ten posts” is not possible. - There are no engagement analytics. Likes, comments and impressions need LinkedIn’s partner-gated Community Management API. Kalovio offers click counts on tracked links, which is a different and much smaller thing — do not read it as post performance.
- You reconnect roughly every 60 days. LinkedIn member tokens expire and self-serve apps get no refresh token, so a periodic re-approval is part of the deal.
- Tagging a company needs its numeric page id the first time, because LinkedIn gives self-serve apps no name lookup. Kalovio keeps a shared directory, so a company tagged once resolves by name after that.
- Multi-image and PDF posts use LinkedIn’s newer versioned interface, which may be product-gated for a self-serve app. If it is blocked for your account you get a clear message rather than a silent failure. Try it on your own account before planning around it.
- Document and PDF posts cannot be scheduled yet — they publish immediately only.
- No direct messages, no connection requests, no lead scraping. None of that is in scope.
Is a LinkedIn connector allowed under LinkedIn’s rules?
The honest position. LinkedIn’s API Terms of Use, section 3.1(26), restricts using the APIs “to automate posting on the LinkedIn Services”, and there is no written exception for member-approved posting. Anyone telling you a posting tool carries no risk at all is overstating it. The defensible framing is narrower: the posting permission is free and self-serve, you grant it through LinkedIn’s own consent screen, you approve the exact wording of every single post before it goes out, nothing is scraped, and you can revoke access from your LinkedIn settings whenever you want.
That is worth weighing yourself. It is a very different proposition from tools that ask you to paste a browser session cookie, which borrow your whole logged-in account and cannot be revoked one at a time.
So is the setup worth it?
If you already pay for ChatGPT and work on the web, it is a one-time setup plus a switch you flip in each new chat. What you get back is writing and publishing in the same conversation where you were already thinking, with a preview you approve before anything reaches your profile. If you are on the free tier, or you live in the mobile app, the connector route is closed to you in ChatGPT today — and Claude is where the same tool works without the paid gate.
Questions people ask
Can I add a LinkedIn connector to a free ChatGPT account?
No. Custom connectors sit behind Developer Mode, which is only on the paid plans — Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu. The free tier has no way to add one. Claude, by contrast, allows a custom connector on its free plan, so that is the no-cost route to the same tool.
Does a LinkedIn connector work in the ChatGPT mobile app?
No. Developer Mode is web only, so you need ChatGPT in a desktop or laptop browser. A connector you added on the web will not appear in the iPhone or Android app. Nothing is broken when that happens — the feature simply does not extend to mobile yet.
